A study published in an issue of Personality and Individual Differences confirmed that Internet trolls are absolutely terrible people.
Internet Trolls – Who they are?
An internet troll is a person who invites themselves into a discussion and posts comments meant to upset or insult the people involved in the discussion. There seems to be no real motive other than to offend the people around. They can go to any extent to get a reaction.
Some Canadian researchers conducted two online tests with 1200 people. Each participant had to take a personality test and there was also a survey about their internet commenting behavior. The researchers wanted to see if trolling was linked to the ‘Dark Tetrad’ of behavioral traits; Machiavellism, Narcissism, Psychopathy, and sadism.
It was found that people who claimed to enjoy trolling had the highest Dark Tetrad scores. As a matter of fact, the study showed a huge difference in the scores between a normal person and an internet troll. The study charts prove that these people who enjoy insulting and humiliating others on the internet have scored really high on all four traits. There is such a significant connection between trolling and the Dark Tetrad that the authors concluded in their paper that internet trolls are undoubtedly “prototypical everyday sadists”, going so far as to specifically highlight it.
Trolls feel sadistic pleasure in causing others pain and sadness. They love ruining your day, affecting your self-confidence and making you doubt yourself. They feel a disgusting sense of glee at causing others distress. It’s not like they have a particular motive or reason for making the comments that they do. They simply do it because it is their way of getting joy from life and that is absolutely horrible. The authors stated in their paper and I quote:” Sadists just want to have fun… and the Internet is their playground!”
How to avoid them!
When you encounter a troll online, make sure not to give them any of your attention. Do not let them ruin your precious time and refuse to acknowledge their comments about you or your work. Neither their opinions nor do they mean anything to you. Always believe in yourself and believe in those who love and support you every step of the way. These trolls are mentally unstable and to get distraught over their words and actions would not be a smart thing to do. So remember:
