Amateur astronomy is a hobby that is characterized by the need for dark skies and nice company for exploring the night. So on the occasion of International Year of Astronomy (2009) in the greek island Thassos took place the first astrocamping. The chosen location was the highest mountain of Thassos. At an altitude of 950 meters, the sky is incredibly dark and clear while the glow of the stars and the galaxy, particularly towards the southern horizon is breathtaking. So it is the ideal environment for a contact with the world of astronomy, astronomical observation and astrophotography.
The daily program is designed so that it appeals to the entire family. During the day, there are numerous of recreational activities, independent of astronomy, such as archery, climbing and paintball. At the same time presentations and lectures on modern astronomical and environmental issues taking place, made for stakeholders, the observational equipment, astrophotography. At night amateur astronomers set up their telescopes to make their own observations and photographs, but also to allow attendees to taste through the telescope observing the Moon, planets, star clusters, galaxies, double stars and nebulae of the summer sky.
The astrocamping combines the sky and the nature and gives the opportunity for people who are sensitive to the environment and would like to meet other people with similar interests, and to spend a few pleasant days and nights, in a green place beneath a spectacular starry sky.
The Astrocamping organized voluntarily by the group of the Association of Friends of Astronomy of eastern Macedonia, who founded by one of the first campers in 2009. Our aim is for people to come together and meet the sky and nature. The volunteers will welcome you to join them and get enjoying the sky and the environment, while learning and informed.
The Astrocamping is the result not only of the work of club members but the voluntary contribution of all those who supported it from the very first time.
